Notes for JOHN MCKINLEY:

(Called "Little John.") John McKinley followed the occupation of his father - a weaver, and like his father, he was energetic and foremost in public enterprise and improvement. In his private business he was thrifty and shrewd. To his business of weaving, he added black-smithing and distilling. He was a highstrung Presbyterian , and has left the stamp of sectarianism on those who came after him in Cnahceford. He too devoted himself to projecting the erection of public roads. He had horses and wagons; he made frequent excursions to Baltimore, Lancaster, and York, carrying not only the simple product of his own loom and distillery, but the scant surplus product of the carding machine, tilt hammer and buckwheat field of his neighbors. He was known among the merchants and particularly the lawyers of York, to whom he brought business. He steadily increased his lands by warrant and purchase, loaned to his poorer neighbors.

John served in the Revolutionary War in 1778, in Captain Joseph Reed's company, York County Militia. Was survived by five children. Also named in his will were a nephew, John, son of Stephen McKinley. Executors: John Finley and Wife, Margaret.

"Crawford County pioneer citizens who knew David McKinley, say that he was a highly educated and polished gentleman of the old school. He was a teacher for many years, and was familiar with several languages. In religion he was a strict Presbyterian, and in politics a Democrat of the Jeffersonian school, as were also the other McKinley's except James, the President's grandfather, who was a Whig. David drew a pension for wounds received in the service."

Among the closest relatives is the Waller family, their homestead being a few miles from the lovely graveyard. Stephen Waller married a sister of the President's father.

He married MARY "POLLY" ROSE August 20, 1804 in Pennsylvania, daughter of ANDREW ROSE and HANNAH CHAPMAN.

Notes for JAMES STEVENSON MCKINLEY:

At the time of his marriage in 1806, James and Polly resided on a farm in Pine Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. When serving in the War of 1812, he fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe under General William Henry Harrison. James was favorably impressed with that area, and decided to move there. When he came to Crawford County, he was accompanied by his son, Ephraim, and they were both carpenters, building a number of buildings in Bucyrus, Holmes, Lykins and Charfield townships. When James moved to his farm in Chatfield, all his sons accompanied him, excepting William, the father of the president. There was also with him his father, David McKinley, and his mother-in-law, Hannah C. Rose.

(From The South Bend Daily Tribune...no date or page given, but sometime between November 1896, to March 1897.)..."They came to St. Joseph county many years ago from the east, settling first about two miles east of Mishawaka near the bank fo the St. Joseph river. They lived there some three or four months, and then moved about seven miles west of the city on a farm a short distance off the Crumstown road. Here James erected a two-story frame house which, like all houses of that period, had a large fireplace. Just before the family moved, James fell off the roof and sustained an injury to one of his wrists. After moving to this farm, the family resided there about eight months, when Polly was taken ill with something akin to malaria, and about two weeks after she came down, James became ill, suffering for eight days, three hours and 15 minutes. James and Polly both died on the same day - their 43rd wedding anniversary.

The children at first thought of placing the remains in a cemetery in the vicinity of their farm, but upon due consideration, decided that it would be better to have a lot in South Bend, where the graves could be looked after. Accordingly, they purchased a lot on the south side of the Laporte Avenue entrance of the city cemetery, and there the good husband and wife are buried, two caskets, but only one vault." James' son, William, cared for the burial site, and replaced the old decayed grave stones with a handsome monument.

Early in the thirties James became interested in the iron business, and was manager of a charcoal furnace for a number of years at Lisbon, Ohio. He was an elder in the Lisbon Presbyterian Church from 1822 to 1836 during the pastorate of Dr. Vallandigham. His eldest son was William 1, father of President William McKinley.

He married IDA SAXTON January 25, 1871 in Perhaps Canton, Ohio?2, daughter of JAMES SAXTON and CATHERINE DEWALT.

Notes for WILLIAM MCKINLEY, II (PRESIDENT):

"William II was educated in the common schools and at Poland Academy. At the age of seventeen, he entered Allegheny College at Meadville, Pennsylvania, but took sick early in the term, and returned home. (Another record says that he left school because of the death of an uncle.) The winter of 1860-61, he taught a country school near Poland, Ohio, three miles from his home. He also worked at the Poland Post Office, and talked of enlisted with his cousin, William Osborne."

The next summer, in June of 1861, he enlisted as a private in the 23d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, but was very quickly promoted to Commissary Sergeant. On September 24, 1862, after the battle of Antietem, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant, and in less than five months, he was a First Lieutenant. On July 25, 1864, he was made Captain, and promoted to the brigade and division staff of General Rutherford B. Hayes, next as Acting Assistant Adjutant General on the staff of General George Crook, then to the staff of Major General Winfield S. Hancock, and subsequently on the staff of General Samuel S. Carroll. He was with Sheridan in his great campaign through the Shenandoah Valley. In a document signed by Abraham Lincoln, which made William McKinley Brevet Major of the United States Volunteers in 1864, "for gallant and meritorious services at the battles of Opequan, Cedar Creek and Fisher's Hill," his distinguished service was proven to all! He was with the famous 23d Ohio in all its battles, and was mustered out with it on July 26, 1865, after more than four years of hard, active and distinguished service.

He and Ida were married at the Presbyterian Church of Canton, by Pastor E. Buckingham, the bride's pastor, assisted by Pastor Endsley, a Methodist clergyman. Ida joined her husband's church after their marriage. Abner, brother of the groom, was the "best man." Mary Saxton was a bride's maid, and later married one of the ushers, a Mr. Barber.

After the war, he turned his attention to the study of law, and attended the Law School at Albany, New York, and in 1867 was admitted to the bar. In 1869 was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Stark County, Ohio, and served two years.

After serving fourteen years continuously in the Congress - from 1876 until March, 1891, he was elected Governor of Ohio in 1891, and re-elected in 1893, by the greatest number of votes ever cast for any State of National candidate in the history of Ohio. Finally, he was elected 25th President of the United States, by an overwhelming majority in 1896. Very sadly, he was assassinated at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, and died eight days later. Buried in Canton, Stark County, Ohio.

Isabelle McKinley Packwood was the third great grandmother of Wyatt L. Schneider. Old letters in his possession indicate that Isabelle was a distant cousin of President McKinley, but the relationship has not been proven. It is hoped that future research will lead us to an accurate connection!
